ATTENTION!!! Cholera Outbreak in Ghana
Ghana is currently grappling with a cholera outbreak that began in October 2024, resulting in 40 deaths and 398 confirmed infections across five regions. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has activated emergency response measures, including public health operations and rapid response teams, to manage the situation.
It is reported by a renowned news agency in Ghana (Citi Newsroom) that about 41 people are receiving medical care whiles the disease spreads to one other district called the La Dadekotopon municipality, a suburb of the Greater Accra region.
Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Symptoms include frequent diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can lead to severe complications if not promptly treated.

To prevent infection, the GHS advises the public to:
•Drink safe, treated water: Ensure all drinking water is from a reliable source or properly treated before consumption.
•Eat well-cooked or properly handled food: Consume food that is thoroughly cooked and handled with clean utensils.
•Practice good hand hygiene: Wash hands with soap under running water before preparing food, before eating, after using the toilet, and after touching surfaces.
•Ensure proper disposal of feces: Use appropriate sanitation facilities to prevent environmental contamination.
•Seek prompt medical attention: If experiencing symptoms like profuse diarrhea and vomiting, visit the nearest health facility immediately.
In addition to these measures, the GHS has conducted an oral cholera vaccination campaign in hotspot areas, vaccinating over 662,000 individuals to curb the spread of the disease.
By adhering to these preventive practices and staying informed through official health advisories, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of cholera infection during this outbreak.
